Maasvlakte 2 is the largest civil engineering project in the Netherlands since the Delta Works. It consists of a new port and supporting infrastructure on reclaimed land adjoining the Maasvlakte. Approximately 5000 acres will be reclaimed, behind a 2.5 mile long dike; approximately 2500 acres will be used by port related industries. It is an extension of the Port of Rotterdam.
Largest container terminal
The area is expected to become operational in 2013; container terminal operators APM Terminals and Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) began construction of their terminals in 2012. RWG is the main competitor for European Container Terminals (ECT), currently the biggest container terminal operator in Rotterdam. RWG's new terminal includes a 65 feet deep dock and its own railroad station, it would be capable of handling 2.35 million containers annually.
